Artist Statements 2019

Portrait artist statement

My piece depicts a famous singer named Billie Ellish. The most obvious element is line due to the tight lines in the eyes and face shape. The most obvious principle is  balance because everything is symmetrical and proportioned correctly.

To create this piece I used a lot of shading and using my materials to help achieve this. There was a lot of erasing and darkening in specific spots to bring realism into my piece.

My inspiration for this piece was to do a person whose content I enjoyed, I was originally going to do an actor but I couldn't get the faces to look right and there was too much facial hair. The emotion I tried to convey was calming and peaceful to bring a certain flow to my piece and to the viewer.

My goal as an artist was to meet the requirements for the project while drawing a person of whom I enjoy. I did not reach my goal because I feel as though I did not use enough contrast to make my piece look a little more life-like.

By creating this piece I learned new techniques for drawing portraits and how I can improve for the next time I do a portrait. Overall I do not like this piece because it does not look like the person I was trying to draw nor does it look realistic. I will use what I learned on this piece for future works because it can help me to improve my weaker areas.

Master's Style Artist Statement

Describe:

My piece is composed of a skull with a Native American head dress made of flowers which replace the typical feathers. The subject matter of my piece is acrylic paint in a different variety of values in the colors. The title of my piece is hereditary, it is based off of the patriotic colors and ethnicity that is shown within my piece. Elements that are most obvious in my piece include the different colors, values, and forms within my piece. Principles that are most obvious in my piece include contrast and movement within throughout my piece.

Create:

The media I decided to do was Impressionism because I enjoyed the style and ideas that went along with it. The tools I used are a canvas board, acrylic paint, and I used paint brushes to create the figures in my piece. I had to use a lot of layering throughout my piece, and a variety of tints and shades to get in all the details. It was very time consuming because of all the little brush strokes I had to do to complete the type of painting I was creating.

Big Idea:

The artist that inspired my artwork is Vincent Van Gough, and I enjoyed his perspective on what he seen and how he manage to recreate it. My work describes a personal issue because it is suppose to represent one's pride in their heritage and for me I am an American who also has blood from those who lived in America before us.

Goals:

My goals as an artist are to be able to recreate what I envision in my head onto what I am using to being it into the real world. This piece unfortunately to me did not reach me goal because for one it is not finished, and two the details are lacking making the whole thing look like one giant blob.

Thoughts:

I learned new techniques and how to communicate to get advice on how to improve my piece when doing this project.  Sadly no, this piece was not at all what I imagined, I was hoping for it to stand out more and for people to be able to tell what it is without me telling them. This piece will influence my future artworks by helping me plan better and work on new techniques to improve my work.

Plaster Sculpture Artist Statement

1.     My artwork depicts a black mythical creature which resembles that of a dragon and has gold scales with hints of red. The face is painted with white and the entire sculpture was crafted from news paper, tape, toilet paper rolls, wire, and paper Mache. The title of my artwork is Dragon being that my subject matter is that of an animal that looks similar to a dragon. Elements that are most obvious in my work are lines, color, and shape. Principles that are most obvious in my piece include movement and pattern.

2.   The media used in my project would be paint, paper Mache, and a few other objects like newspaper to help build the structure of my sculpture. Some tools used would be wire and toilet paper rolls that helped keep my project solid and stable. One process when doing this piece was a lot layering of not only paint but paper Mache and newspaper as well.

3.    What inspired my artwork was the idea of mythology, I wanted to create something different but also something meaningful, and in Chinese culture a dragon represents power or sometimes luck. My work does not express a social nor a personal issue but it does have some sort of meaning as included in sentence one. I did not include any emotions in my artwork although I did try to keep an oriental appearance to my piece.

4.   My goal as an artist is to create art in many forms and ideas, I want to express art through different medias and styles that reach out to those viewing. This particular piece did not help me reach that goal due to it not looking as how it was envisioned in my head. I feel my piece does not reach this goal because of its appearance not looking like a dragon but more of a hybrid of another animal.

5.   I learned how to use new resources around me and apply it into my artwork when doing this project. The final piece is not exactly what I was hoping it to be but it did give me some experience for when I do the project another time. This piece will help me with future art because I learned how to use those materials and what process would be needed to complete another project in the future.

Anatomical Study Artist Statement

1.     My artwork looks like the inside of a human being as if to dissect what the inside of one part of an individual would like. The subject matter in the piece is that of a man whose throat and part of the head is exposed to where the viewer can see some muscles, veins, and vessels. The title of my work is "The Inside Scoop" and the most obvious elements include color, line, and value. The most obvious principles in my piece include movement and emphasis.

2.     The media used for this artwork includes Prisma pencils, baby oil, and tan construction paper. I used the process when using the Prisma pencils by first adding my highlights, then the lighter parts, then light colors, and finally burnishing with the dark colors. I used a lot of layering and baby oil to bring back some of the tooth of the paper.

3.      The artist who influenced this artwork is Wanjin Gim and he specializes with anatomical art, he typically does art based on the human body. This art does not express a social nor personal issue but it does show what people look like on the outside and on the inside and can convey the idea that we are all the same and we are all human.

4.     My goal as an artist is to try new medias and to improve in my work as I continue with new ideas and new pieces of art. This piece surprisingly did help me to reach that goal because I took a risk by doing the inside of a human body rather than an animal, something I would have been more comfortable with doing.

5.     I learned new processes and how to work on improving my art based on my other pieces prior to this one. The final piece actually turned out better than I imagined, I thought that it was going to turn out horrible because I am not really good at drawing people. This piece will influence my future artworks by getting me out of my comfort zone and to challenge myself more often, take a risk and improve based on the risk I've taken.

BUA Inspired Artist Statement

1.      My artwork depicts a celebrity and a fictional character in a landscape that resembles New York City. My subject matter is Stan Lee with his arm wrapped around Spider-Man with New York City as the background. The title of my piece is "Excelsior" because that was one of Stan Lee's most famous quotes. Elements that are most obvious in my piece include color, value, and line. Principles that are most obvious in my piece include contrast and balance.

2.     The media that makes up my art is Prisma colored pencils and baby oil on paper. Tools I used would be the baby oil and Prisma colored pencils. Processes I used was coloring process we used when doing the anatomical drawings, I did things such as burnishing and using highlights. I applied baby oil when I was finished coloring to help blend and brighten the colors.

3.     The people who inspired my artwork is the artist named Justin BUA and Stan Lee because Stan Lee created (or helped) Marvel which includes the majority of characters that I read about or watched growing up as kid. He did so much in his lifetime and inspired so many of us that I felt I should do a piece on him. My work expresses both a personal issue and a social issue because his death not only impacted me but the rest of the world that watched or read the movies or comics that he participated in. I did not try to express emotions as I did Stan Lee himself, I used New York City as the background because that is where both him and Spider-Man (one of the first Marvel heroes created) are from.

4.     My goals as an artist are to show my personality and style through my artwork as well as to accomplish the goals of the projects we do in class. This piece indeed did help me to reach that goal using reasons from paragraph 3.

5.     When creating this piece I learned a new style, I learned how to keep it semi realistic while still giving it a cartoon effect. The final piece is not exactly what I had in mind, but I feel as though it turned out decent. This piece will influence my future artworks by allowing me to apply the new techniques that I have learned into future works of art.

Clay Artist Statement

1.     My artwork looks like and is a giant sushi, it has rice, fish, seaweed, and chopsticks. The title of my piece is "Sushi". Elements that are most obvious in my piece include texture, shape, and form. Principles most obvious in my piece includes pattern.

2.     My artwork is made of clay but I used real chopsticks as well. Tools I used would be those that scratch and help create texture, a wheel, and a sponge. The two processes that I used in my piece were the pinch pot and coil pot processes.

3.     What inspired my artwork was the multiple attempts it took for me to finally create something that looked decent, and that sushi is one of my favorite foods. My artwork doesn't really express a social nor personal issue. I did not show any emotion in my artwork like I wanted with my original idea.

4.     My goals as an artist are to get use to working with clay and learn new ways to accomplish my original ideas. This piece however did not help me to reach these goals because it was not what I originally had planned.

5.     I learned to take time when working with something that is a little more challenging for me and new processes that could help me improve my work later on. The final piece is not what I imagined because I originally planned to do a spider that holds candles but because the legs could not support the body I ended up doing a cactus. I then decided to cut the cactus in half and create sushi by using that clay. This piece will influence my future works of art by helping me plan better and keep my mind open for new techniques that could help me instead of sticking to what I already know.

Art Show Piece Artist Statement

1.     My artwork looks like a surreal land that has odd creatures. My subject matter contains a bunch of flower-like creatures and some sort of plant monster. The title of my piece is a "place unlike our own". Elements most obvious in my work is the wide assortment of colors and the different thick and thin lines. principles most obvious in my piece is the contrast and different patterns.

2.     My artwork consists of paint on a canvas. I used paint brushes to create my work, it was a long process that took a lot of layering, mixing, and rendering of tight lines to create my piece.

3.     What inspired my artwork was me wanting to do something different from everyone else. I like the idea of creating something out of a dream or in this case a nightmare. My piece expresses a personal issue, my piece reminds me of a song that describes the singer as living in a dream because some of us have a hard time facing reality. I tried to show the emotion of confusion.

4.     My goals as an artist are to have people understand some of the things that me or most people would think about. My piece did not do the best job with showing this goal, I did not make the message as clear as I would have hoped.

5.     I learned how to use expression, symbolism, and surrealism all in one piece. The final piece did come out as planned but the message was not conveyed clearly. This piece will teach me to show more emotion in my works of art and to learn how to connect it into my piece.
